Grants and Scholarships for Masters in Theology Students

A master’s degree in theology can help you learn more about your faith and how to better encourage others to follow your faith system as well. By getting a master’s degree, you can also qualify for advanced jobs in this field, giving you tons of additional career opportunities so you can support yourself and your family while still doing God’s work. Grants and scholarships are available for theology students who need help paying for school, and with a little research and some excellent applications, you could actually go to school for free.

Grants Versus Scholarships

Grants and scholarships are similar in some respects. Both are available for students who are attending school at accredited colleges and universities, and both are available from a variety of sources, including organizations, community groups, companies, and the government. Grants and scholarships are also both sources of money that do not have to be repaid, even after you graduate, making them more attractive than student loans. There are some differences between these two sources of money, however. Grants are typically available to students who show clear financial need. On the other hand, scholarships are given based on merit, so even if you don’t prove strong financial burden, you can earn money for college by getting good grades, writing a winning essay, or showing a special talent.

Theology Grants

As an undergraduate student, you may have qualified for the Pell Grant, a federal grant that is available for all students who meet financial qualifications. As a graduate student earning a master’s degree in theology, some of the places where you may be able to find grants include with the National Ministries of the American Baptist Church and the Association of Theological Schools. Your college of choice likely also offer grants to qualifying students.

Theology Scholarships

Scholarships are also available to theology students. Sources change from year to year, but some of the places where you can start your search include with the Mary E. Bivins Foundation, Alpha Tau Omega, the United Methodist Church, the Disciples Home Missions, and The Lilly Foundation. Like with grants, you may also be eligible for scholarships directly from your college.
